I Went Undercover at Mecca Shopping for a 14-Year-Old — Here’s What Tweens & Teens Really Need for Their Skin
Walking into Mecca or Sephora can feel exciting — shelves filled with colourful bottles, viral products from TikTok, and promises of glowing skin everywhere you look. But when it comes to tween and teen skin, more products doesn’t always mean better skin and can be overwhelming.
To better understand what advice young people are receiving, I recently went undercover at Mecca. I told the sales assistant I was shopping for my 14-year-old niece who has no current skincare routine and simply uses whatever products are at home — often whatever her mum is using.
What followed was a mix of helpful advice, missed opportunities, and one big red flag that parents and teens need to know about.
The Good, the Bad & the Missing Basics
🌸 The First Recommendation: Glow Recipe
The first brand suggested was Glow Recipe, specifically gift packs containing Dew Drops and a BHA toner.
While Glow Recipe is a popular and offers a pretty product selection, a lot of these formulas are not ideal for a 14-year-old just starting skincare. Many Glow Recipe products contain:
- Artificial fragrance
- Active ingredients like exfoliating acids
These can be irritating, especially for young skin that hasn’t yet built tolerance or balance. Actives and fragranced products should never be the first step in a skincare routine for tweens or early teens.
✅ A Tick for Saying No to Drunk Elephant
When I asked about Drunk Elephant, the staff member said it was expensive and unnecessary for that age group.
I was so happy to hear these words come out of her mouth! Teen skin does not need luxury formulations or complex active blends — and spending hundreds of dollars won’t improve results. This was a refreshing and responsible response.
🧪 Asking the Right Questions About Allergies
I mentioned that my niece has food allergies, and the assistant asked whether she reacts to SLS or fragrance.
Another tick. Asking about sensitivities and allergies is essential, especially for young skin that can be more reactive or doesn't have a lot of experience with skincare.
🩹 Patch Testing: A Huge Positive
The assistant then offered a sample of the Glow Recipe toner to try first.
This is a big win. Patch testing is the only true way to know if a product will work for your skin or against it, and can prevent unnecessary irritation, rashes, or breakouts — particularly for teens.
🚫 Avoiding Retinol & Strong Actives
She also shared that she generally advises younger people to stay away from retinol and strong active ingredients.
Another great point. Teen skin is still developing and does not need strong anti-ageing products designed for mature skin.
❌ Sol de Janeiro: Not Teen-Skin Friendly
Sol de Janeiro was also mentioned — and this is where we need to pause.
Teenagers do not need:
- Bum-lifting creams
- Firming body treatments
- Strong artificial fragrance
These products are heavily scented and designed for adult concerns. While fun, they’re not appropriate for young, sensitive skin.
? The Biggest Problem: Where Was the Cleanser ?
Despite discussing toners, serums, actives and SPF…
Not once was a cleanser recommended. I even gave the staff member a chance to catch on - asking multiple times if there were any other skincare essentials that she should be using.
This is a big issue, particularly if you're relying on guidance from staff members and you have no knowledge of skincare. For tweens and teens, cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin. Without a gentle cleanser, everything else is pointless.
The Two Non-Negotiables for Teen Skin
If there are only two products a tween or teen should invest in, they are:
- A gentle, age-appropriate cleanser
- A daily SPF
That’s it.
No acids. No retinol. No 10-step routines.

We have nothing against Mecca or Sephora. They’re can offer a fun in store experience when guided in the right direction.
